Giant cell tumors (GCTs) are generally benign, locally aggressive lesions mostly located in the metaphysis of long bones. GCTs of the skull are rare and the majority of the cases have been presented as case reports. The authors retrospectively reported 18 patients with GCTs of the skull at a single institution from April 1994 to February 2012 and summarized the clinical, radiological, pathological characteristics and management of the disease. Meanwhile, a systematic review of 94 case reports of GCTs of the skull was performed. Headache and symptoms related to the involvement of intracranial nerves were the most common symptoms. Over 90 % of the tumors originated from sphenoid and temporal bones. On MRI, very low signal on T2-weighted images were found highly indicative of GCTs of the temporal bone. Univariate analysis revealed that extent of tumor resection and post-operative radiation therapy (RT) were prognostic factors significantly influencing the survival of the patients. We concluded that complete tumor resection is the optimal goal in treating this disease and adjuvant RT should be given once tumor residual is inevitable.

Giant cell tumors of the skull: a series of 18 cases and review of the literature.

Worldwide, cases of pituitary adenoma with gangliocytoma are rarely reported. The current study reports the cases of two 47-year-old females who presented with masses in the sellar region following a general examination and radiological imaging. The two patients underwent sellar region tumor resection via the trans-naso-sphenoid approach. The histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a hormone-free pituitary adenoma with gangliocytoma. The two patients were in good condition and experienced no specific discomfort subsequent to the follow-up after surgery. Gangliocytoma is a slowly growing and non-metastasizing tumor. A biopsy is required to differentiate a gangliocytoma from a malignant neuroblastoma, and excision is usually curative.

Pituitary adenoma with gangliocytoma: Report of two cases.

Here we reported the first case of left cerebellopontine angle acoustic neurinoma with calcification in our department. The patient was 65 year-old, suffering from progressive loss of hearing in the left ear for about 30 years and headache with unsteady gait for approximately 6 months. Head CT & MRI scan identified an intracranial lesion located on left cerebellopontine angle. Left suboccipital retrosigmoid approach was applied to perform the operation after patient consent. The tumor was completely resected without complication and the patient recovered well. Histological findings revealed Spindle-shaped tumor cells tightly compacted to form the Antoni A region, while loosely arranged to form the Antoni B region. Hyaline degeneration and calcification formation were observed across the majority of the tumor.

The first calcified acoustic neurinoma identified in China: a case report and literature review.

Solitary intracranial metastases of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) are rare, and their management is still controversial. This research aimed to seek suitable therapeutic methods for this disease.

Management of Solitary Intracranial Metastases of Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma: 11 Pathologically Confirmed Cases and Systematic Literature Review.

To investigate the predictive utility of stimulation threshold (ST) of intraoperative electromyography monitoring for facial nerve (FN) outcomes among vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients postoperatively. The authors enrolled 103 unilateral VS patients who underwent surgical resection into a prospective cohort observational study from January 2013 to April 2015 in our hospital. ST values were used to categorize 81 patients into the "low current" (ST ≤ 0.05 mA) group and 22 patients into the control (ST > 0.05 mA) group. The FN function outcomes were summarized and correlated with these two groups at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. Binary regression analysis revealed that the percentage of "good" FN outcome, defined by House-Brackmann (HB) classification of facial function (I-II), in the "low current" group was significantly higher than that of the control group (42.0 vs. 4.5% at 1 month, P = 0.015; 64.2 vs. 31.8% at 3 months, P = 0.024; 72.8 vs. 40.9% at 6 months, P = 0.021; 84.0 vs. 45.5% at 12 months, P = 0.002). Ordinal regression analysis showed that the distribution of HB scores was shifted in a favorable direction in the "low current" group at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. For patients with HB IV at the first month postoperative period, the recovery rate of the "low current" group was significantly higher than that of control group (P = 0.003). "Low current" can predict FN function outcomes better and has faster recovery rates than that of the control group.
