Oxygen minimum zones, also known as oceanic "dead zones," are widespread oceanographic features currently expanding because of global warming. Although inhospitable to metazoan life, they support a cryptic microbiota whose metabolic activities affect nutrient and trace gas cycling within the global ocean. Here, we report metagenomic analyses of a ubiquitous and abundant but uncultivated oxygen minimum zone microbe (SUP05) related to chemoautotrophic gill symbionts of deep-sea clams and mussels. The SUP05 metagenome harbors a versatile repertoire of genes mediating autotrophic carbon assimilation, sulfur oxidation, and nitrate respiration responsive to a wide range of water-column redox states. Our analysis provides a genomic foundation for understanding the ecological and biogeochemical role of pelagic SUP05 in oxygen-deficient oceanic waters and its potential sensitivity to environmental changes.

Metagenome of a versatile chemolithoautotroph from expanding oceanic dead zones.

Sauerstoff minimale Zonen, auch bekannt als ozeanische &quot;toten Zonen&quot; sind weit verbreitete ozeanographische Features, die derzeit wegen der globalen Erw&auml;rmung erweitern. Obwohl indem Leben unwirtlich, unterst&uuml;tzen sie eine kryptische Microbiota, deren metabolischen Aktivit&auml;ten N&auml;hrstoff und Trace Gas Radfahren innerhalb des globalen Ozeans auswirken. Hier berichten wir &uuml;ber durchgef&uuml;hrte metagenomische Analysen von einem allgegenw&auml;rtigen und reichlich aber Wildpflanze Sauerstoff gramnegativer Gill Symbionten von Tiefsee-Muscheln und Muscheln minimale Zone Mikrobe (SUP05) verwandt. Die SUP05 Metagenome birgt ein vielseitiges Repertoire von Genen, die Vermittlung von autotrophen CO2-Assimilation, Schwefel-Oxidation und Nitrat-Atmung, die auf eine Vielzahl von Wasser-Spalte Redox Staaten reagieren. Unsere Analyse bietet eine genomische Grundlage f&uuml;r das Verst&auml;ndnis der &ouml;kologischen und biogeochemische Rolle der pelagische SUP05 in Sauerstoff-Mangel ozeanischen Gew&auml;ssern und seine m&ouml;gliche Empfindlichkeit gegen&uuml;ber Umweltver&auml;nderungen.

Pitch Lake in Trinidad and Tobago is a natural asphalt reservoir nourished by pitch seepage, a form of petroleum that consists of mostly asphaltines, from the surrounding oil-rich region. During upward seepage, pitch mixes with mud and gases under high pressure, and the lighter portion evaporates or is volatilized, which produces a liquid asphalt residue characterized by low water activity, recalcitrant carbon substrates, and noxious chemical compounds. An active microbial community of archaea and bacteria, many of them novel strains (particularly from the new Tar ARC groups), totaling a biomass of up to 10(7) cells per gram, was found to inhabit the liquid hydrocarbon matrix of Pitch Lake. Geochemical and molecular taxonomic approaches revealed diverse, novel, and deeply branching microbial lineages with the potential to mediate anaerobic hydrocarbon degradation processes in different parts of the asphalt column. In addition, we found markers for archaeal methane metabolism and specific gene sequences affiliated with facultative and obligate anaerobic sulfur- and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria. The microbial diversity at Pitch Lake was found to be unique when compared to microbial communities analyzed at other hydrocarbon-rich environments, which included Rancho Le Brea, a natural asphalt environment in California, USA, and an oil well and a mud volcano in Trinidad and Tobago, among other sites. These results open a window into the microbial ecology and biogeochemistry of recalcitrant hydrocarbon matrices and establish the site as a terrestrial analogue for modeling the biotic potential of hydrocarbon lakes such as those found on Saturn's largest moon Titan.

W&auml;hrend aufw&auml;rts sickern, Tonh&ouml;he vermischt mit Schlamm und unter hohem Druck stehendes Gas, und der leichtere Teil verdunstet oder volatilized ist, erzeugt einen fl&uuml;ssigen Asphalt-R&uuml;ckstand zeichnet sich durch niedrigen Wasseraktivit&auml;t, widerspenstige Kohlenstoff Substrate und sch&auml;dliche chemische Verbindungen. Eine aktive mikrobielle Community von Archaeen und Bakterien, viele von ihnen neuen St&auml;mmen (vor allem aus den neuen Tar ARC Gruppen), mit eine Biomasse von bis zu 7 Zellen pro Gramm, insgesamt wurde festgestellt, dass die fl&uuml;ssige Kohlenwasserstoff-Matrix der Pitch Lake bewohnen. Geochemische und Molekulare taxonomischen Ans&auml;tzen offenbart, vielf&auml;ltig, Roman, und tief Verzweigung mikrobielle &Uuml;bertragungslinien mit dem Potenzial, anaeroben Kohlenwasserstoff Abbauprozesse in verschiedenen Teilen der Asphalt Spalte zu vermitteln. Dar&uuml;ber hinaus fanden wir Marker f&uuml;r reitenden Methan Stoffwechsel und spezifischen Gensequenzen, die fakultative und obligat anaeroben Schwefel - und Nitrit oxidierenden Bakterien angegliedert. Die mikrobielle Vielfalt im Pitch Lake wurde festgestellt, dass im Vergleich zu den Mikrobengemeinschaften analysiert bei anderen kohlenwasserstoffreichen-Umgebungen, die Rancho Le Brea, einer nat&uuml;rlichen Asphalt-Umgebung in Kalifornien, USA, und eine &Ouml;lquelle und ein Schlammvulkan in Trinidad und Tobago, unter anderen Seiten enthalten eindeutig sein. Diese Ergebnisse &ouml;ffnen Sie ein Fenster in die Mikrobielle &Ouml;kologie und Biogeochemie widerspenstige Kohlenwasserstoff-Matrizen und die Website als ein terrestrisch analog zur Modellierung des Biotic-Potenzials der Kohlenwasserstoff-Seen, z. B. am gr&ouml;&szlig;ten Saturnmondes Titan einzurichten.
