The human F11 receptor (F11R) is an important cell adhesion molecule implicated in inflammatory thrombosis. We hypothesize that serum levels of the soluble released form of F11R (sF11R) are elevated in dialysis patients since these patients have higher cardiovascular disease burdens than the general population. In this study, we examined whether sF11R levels were elevated in hemodialysis (HD) patients and correlated with known inflammatory cytokines.

Magnetochromatic microspheres have been fabricated through instant assembly of superparamagnetic (SPM) colloidal particles inside emulsion droplets of UV curable resin followed by an immediate UV curing process to polymerize the droplets and fix the ordered structures. When dispersed in the liquid droplets, superparamagnetic Fe(3)O(4)@SiO(2) core/shell particles self-organize under the balanced interaction of repulsive and attractive forces to form one-dimensional chains, each of which contains periodically arranged particles diffracting visible light and displaying field-tunable colors. UV initiated polymerization of the oligomers of the resin fixes the periodic structures inside the droplet microspheres and retains the diffraction property. Because the superparamagnetic chains tend to align themselves along the field direction, it is very convenient to control the orientation of such photonic microspheres and, accordingly, their diffractive colors, by changing the orientation of the crystal lattice relative to the incident light using magnetic fields. The excellent stability together with the capability of fast on/off switching of the diffraction by magnetic fields makes the system suitable for applications such as color display, rewritable signage, and sensors. As a simple demonstration, we have fabricated a display unit that has on/off bistable states by embedding the magnetochromatic microspheres in a matrix that can thermally switch between solid and liquid phases.

Die ausgezeichnete Stabilit&auml;t zusammen mit der F&auml;higkeit der schnellen ein-/Umschalten von der Beugung durch Magnetfelder macht das System f&uuml;r Anwendungen wie Farbdisplay, wiederbeschreibbare Beschilderung und Sensoren geeignet. Als eine einfache Demonstration haben wir einem Sichtger&auml;t fabriziert, die ein-oder bistabil Staaten durch Einbetten von Magnetochromatic Mikrosph&auml;ren in eine Matrix, die thermisch zwischen festen und fl&uuml;ssigen Phasen wechseln kann.

Encoded particles have a demonstrated value for multiplexed high-throughput bioassays such as drug discovery and clinical diagnostics. In diverse samples, the ability to use a large number of distinct identification codes on assay particles is important to increase throughput. Proper handling schemes are also needed to readout these codes on free-floating probe microparticles. Here we create vivid, free-floating structural coloured particles with multi-axis rotational control using a colour-tunable magnetic material and a new printing method. Our colour-barcoded magnetic microparticles offer a coding capacity easily into the billions with distinct magnetic handling capabilities including active positioning for code readouts and active stirring for improved reaction kinetics in microscale environments. A DNA hybridization assay is done using the colour-barcoded magnetic microparticles to demonstrate multiplexing capabilities.

Matrix mineralization is a terminal process in osteoblast differentiation, and several approaches have been introduced to characterize the process in tissues or cultured cells. However, an analytical technique that quantitates in vitro matrix mineralization of live cells without any labeling or complex treatments is still lacking. In this study, we investigate a simple and enhanced optical method based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) detection that can monitor the surface-limited refractive index change in real-time. During monitoring MC3T3-E1 cells in vitro culture every 2 days for over 4 weeks, the SPR angle is shifted with a greater resonance change in cells cultured with osteogenic reagents than those without the reagents. In addition, the SPR results obtained have a close relevance with the tendency of conventional mineralization staining and an inductively coupled plasma-based calcium content measure. These results suggest a new approach of a real-time SPR monitoring in vitro matrix mineralization of cultured cells.

Allerdings fehlt es noch an eine analytische Technik, die in-vitro-Matrix Mineralisierung der lebenden Zellen ohne eine Kennzeichnung oder komplexen Behandlungen quantitates. In dieser Studie untersuchen wir eine einfache und erweiterte optische Methode basierend auf Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR)-Erkennung, die die Oberfl&auml;che-begrenzte Brechungsindex-&Auml;nderung in Echtzeit &uuml;berwachen k&ouml;nnen. W&auml;hrend der &Uuml;berwachung MC3T3-E1-Zellen in Vitro Kultur alle 2 Tage &uuml;ber 4 Wochen wird der SPR-Winkel mit einer gr&ouml;&szlig;eren Resonanz-Verschiebung in den Zellen kultiviert mit osteogenen Reagenzien als solche ohne Reagenzien verlagert. Dar&uuml;ber hinaus haben die SPR Ergebnisse eine enge Relevanz mit der Tendenz des konventionellen Mineralisierung F&auml;rbung und eine Induktiv gekoppelte Plasma-basierte Kalzium-Inhalt-Ma&szlig;nahme. Diese Resultate schlagen einen neuen Ansatz eine Echtzeit-SPR, die &Uuml;berwachung von in-vitro-Matrix Mineralisierung der kultivierten Zellen.

Real-time optofluidic synthesis of magnetochromatic microspheres for reversible structural color patterning.

Polymeric microcomponents are widely used in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and lab-on-a-chip devices, but they suffer from the lack of complex motion, effective addressability and precise shape control. To address these needs, we fabricated polymeric nanocomposite microactuators driven by programmable heterogeneous magnetic anisotropy. Spatially modulated photopatterning was applied in a shape-independent manner to microactuator components by successive confinement of self-assembled magnetic nanoparticles in a fixed polymer matrix. By freely programming the rotational axis of each component, we demonstrate that the polymeric microactuators can undergo predesigned, complex two- and three-dimensional motion.

Programming magnetic anisotropy in polymeric microactuators.

Polymeres Microcomponents sind weit verbreitet in Microelectromechanical Systeme (MEMS) und Lab-on-a-Chip-Ger&auml;te, aber sie leiden unter dem Mangel an komplexe Bewegungen, effektive Adressierbarkeit und pr&auml;zise Form-Steuerelement. Um diese Anforderungen zu begegnen, fabriziert wir Polymere Nanocomposite Microactuators angetrieben von programmierbaren heterogene magnetischen Anisotropie. R&auml;umlich modulierte Photopatterning wurde durch aufeinanderfolgende Beengtheit monomolekularen magnetische Nanopartikel in einer festen Polymermatrix Form-unabh&auml;ngig auf Microactuator Komponenten angewendet. Durch frei programmieren die Drehachse der einzelnen Komponenten, zeigen wir, dass die Polymere Microactuators vordefinierte, komplexe zwei- und dreidimensionale Bewegung durchlaufen kann.

Magnetische Anisotropie in Polymeren Microactuators Programmierung.

Chromogranin A knock-out (Chga-KO) mice display increased adiposity despite high levels of circulating catecholamines and leptin. Consistent with diet-induced obese mice, desensitization of leptin receptors caused by hyperleptinemia is believed to contribute to the obese phenotype of these KO mice. In contrast, obesity in ob/ob mice is caused by leptin deficiency. To characterize the metabolic phenotype, Chga-KO mice were treated with the CHGA-derived peptide catestatin (CST) that is deficient in these mice. CST treatment reduced fat depot size and increased lipolysis and fatty acid oxidation. In liver, CST enhanced oxidation of fatty acids as well as their assimilation into lipids, effects that are attributable to the up-regulation of genes promoting fatty acid oxidation (Cpt1Î±, PparÎ±, Acox, and Ucp2) and incorporation into lipids (Gpat and CD36). CST did not affect basal or isoproterenol-stimulated cAMP production in adipocytes but inhibited phospholipase C activation by the Î±-adrenergic receptor (AR) agonist phenylephrine, suggesting inhibition of Î±-AR signaling by CST. Indeed, CST mimicked the lipolytic effect of the Î±-AR blocker phentolamine on adipocytes. Moreover, CST reversed the hyperleptinemia of Chga-KO mice and improved leptin signaling as determined by phosphorylation of AMPK and Stat3. CST also improved peripheral leptin sensitivity in diet-induced obese mice. In ob/ob mice, CST enhanced leptin-induced signaling in adipose tissue. In conclusion, our results implicate CST in a novel pathway that promotes lipolysis and fatty acid oxidation by blocking Î±-AR signaling as well as by enhancing leptin receptor signaling.

Catestatin (chromogranin A(352-372)) and novel effects on mobilization of fat from adipose tissue through regulation of adrenergic and leptin signaling.

Chromogranin A Knock-out-(Chga-KO) M&auml;use zeigen erh&ouml;hte Adipositas trotz eines hohen Niveaus der zirkulierenden Katecholamine und Leptin. In &Uuml;bereinstimmung mit fettleibigen M&auml;use induziert durch Di&auml;t, Desensibilisierung von Leptin-Rezeptoren, die durch Hyperleptinemia verursacht vermutlich die adip&ouml;sen Ph&auml;notyp von dieser KO-M&auml;usen beitragen. Im Gegensatz dazu wird Adipositas in Ob/Ob M&auml;use durch Leptinmangel verursacht. Um die metabolische Ph&auml;notyp zu charakterisieren, wurden Chga-KO-M&auml;usen mit dem CHGA abgeleitete Peptid-Catestatin (CST) behandelt einen Mangel an solche M&auml;use. CST-Behandlung reduziert Fett Depot Gr&ouml;&szlig;e und erh&ouml;hte Lipolyse und Fetts&auml;ure-Oxidation. In Leber verbessert die CST Oxidation der Fetts&auml;uren sowie deren Assimilation in die Lipide, Auswirkungen auf die oben-Verordnung von Genen, die F&ouml;rderung der Fetts&auml;ure-Oxidation (Cpt1&alpha;, beteiligt, Acox und Ucp2) und Einbindung in Lipiden (Gpat und CD36) zur&uuml;ckzuf&uuml;hren sind. CST beeinflusste nicht basal oder Isoproterenol-stimuliert cAMP-Produktion in Adipozyten aber gehemmt Phospholipase C Aktivierung von &alpha;-adrenerge Rezeptor (AR)-Agonist-Phenylephrin, Hemmung der &alpha;-AR Signalisierung durch CST vorschlagen. In der Tat imitiert CST die lipolytische Wirkung der &alpha;-AR-Blocker Phentolamin auf Adipozyten. CST umgekehrt dar&uuml;ber hinaus die Hyperleptinemia von Chga-KO-M&auml;usen und verbesserte Leptin Signalisierung durch Phosphorylierung von AMPK und Stat3 bestimmt. CST verbessert auch periphere Leptin Empfindlichkeit bei fettleibigen M&auml;usen Di&auml;t induziert. Ob/Ob M&auml;use verbessert CST, induziert durch Leptin signalisieren in Fettgewebe. Abschlie&szlig;end implizieren unsere Ergebnisse CST in einen neuartigen Weg, der Lipolyse und Fetts&auml;ure-Oxidation durch die Blockade der &alpha;-AR Signalisierung sowie durch verst&auml;rkte Leptin Rezeptor Signalgebung f&ouml;rdert.

Vanadium-magnesium oxide catalysts supported on nano-structured MgO and ZrO2 (Mg3(VO4)2/MgO/ZrO2) were prepared by a wet impregnation method with a variation of Mg:Zr ratio (8:1, 4:1, 2:1, and 1:1). For comparison, Mg3(VO4)2/MgO and Mg3(VO4)2/ZrO2 catalysts were also prepared by a wet impregnation method. The prepared catalysts were applied to the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane in a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor. Mg3(VO4)2/MgO/ZrO2 (Mg:Zr = 4:1, 2:1, and 1:1) and Mg3(VO4)2/ZrO2 catalysts showed a stable catalytic activity during the whole reaction time, while Mg3(VO4)2/MgO/ZrO2 (8:1) and Mg3(VO4)2/MgO catalysts experienced a severe catalyst deactivation. Deactivation of Mg3(VO4)2/MgO/ZrO2 (8:1) and Mg3(VO4)2/MgO catalysts was due to their low oxygen mobility. Effect of oxygen capacity (the amount of oxygen in the catalyst involved in the reaction) of the supported Mg3(V04)2 catalysts on the catalytic performance in the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane was investigated. Experimental results revealed that oxygen capacity of the catalyst was closely related to the catalytic activity in the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane. A large oxygen capacity of the catalyst was favorable for obtaining a high catalytic activity in this reaction. Among the catalysts tested, Mg3(VO4)2/MgO/ZrO2 (4:1) catalyst with the largest oxygen capacity showed the best catalytic performance.

Oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane over vanadium magnesium oxide catalysts supported on nano-structured MgO and ZrO2: effect of oxygen capacity of the catalyst.

Vanadium-Magnesium-Oxid-Katalysatoren auf nanostrukturierte MgO und ZrO2 unterst&uuml;tzt (Mg3(VO4)2/MgO/ZrO2) wurden hergestellt, indem eine nasse Impr&auml;gnierung-Methode mit einer Variation des Mg:Zr Verh&auml;ltnisses (8:1, 4:1, 2:1 und 1:1). Zum Vergleich: Mg3 (VO4) 2/MgO und Mg3 (VO4) 2/ZrO2 Katalysatoren wurden auch von einer nassen Impr&auml;gnierung-Methode bereit. Die vorbereiteten Katalysatoren wurden f&uuml;r die oxidative Dehydrierung von n-Butan in einem kontinuierlichen Fluss Festbettreaktor angewendet. MG3 (VO4) 2/MgO/ZrO2 (Mg:Zr = 4:1, 2:1 und 1:1) und Mg3 (VO4) 2/ZrO2 Katalysatoren zeigte eine stabile katalytische Aktivit&auml;t w&auml;hrend der gesamten Reaktionszeit beim Mg3 (VO4) 2/MgO/ZrO2 (8:1) und Mg3 (VO4) 2/MgO Katalysatoren erlebt eine schwere Katalysator-Deaktivierung. Deaktivierung des Mg3 (VO4) 2/MgO/ZrO2 (8:1) und Mg3 (VO4) 2/MgO Katalysatoren wurde aufgrund ihrer niedrigen Sauerstoff-Mobilit&auml;t. Wirkung von Sauerstoffkapazit&auml;t (die Menge an Sauerstoff in den Katalysator an der Reaktion beteiligt) von der unterst&uuml;tzten Mg3 (V04) 2 Katalysatoren auf die katalytische Leistung in der oxidativen Dehydrierung von n-Butan wurde untersucht. Experimentelle Ergebnisse ergab, dass die Sauerstoffkapazit&auml;t des Katalysators zur katalytischen Aktivit&auml;t in der oxidativen Dehydrierung von n-Butan eng verwandt war. Eine gro&szlig;e Sauerstoffkapazit&auml;t des Katalysators war vorteilhaft f&uuml;r die Beschaffung einer hohen katalytischen Aktivit&auml;t in dieser Reaktion. Unter die Katalysatoren getestet, Mg3 (VO4) 2/MgO/ZrO2 (4:1) Katalysator mit der gr&ouml;&szlig;ten Sauerstoffkapazit&auml;t zeigte die beste katalytische Leistung.

Oxidative Dehydrierung von n-Butan &uuml;ber Vanadium Magnesiumoxid Katalysatoren auf nanostrukturierte MgO und ZrO2 unterst&uuml;tzt: Wirkung von Sauerstoffkapazit&auml;t des Katalysators.

Wir pr&auml;sentieren eine Studie &uuml;ber die umlaufende Knickung Stahlrohr geformte Gele induziert durch Schwellung. Inhomogene Spannung entwickelt wie das Gel unter mechanischen Einschr&auml;nkungen, schwillt an, was zu spontanen Beulanalyse Instabilit&auml;t ohne eine externe Kraft f&uuml;hrt. Volle Kontrolle &uuml;ber das postbuckling Muster ist experimentell nachgewiesen. Ein einfaches analytisches Modell ist mit elastischen Energie vorherzusagen, Stabilit&auml;t und postbuckling Muster auf Schwellung entwickelt. Analyse zeigt, dass die H&ouml;he Durchmesser-Verh&auml;ltnis ist der kritischste Design-Parameter das Knickl&auml;nge Muster, zu bestimmen, welche gut mit experimentellen und numerischen Ergebnisse stimmt.

We present a study on swelling-induced circumferential buckling of tubular shaped gels. Inhomogeneous stress develops as the gel swells under mechanical constraints, which gives rise to spontaneous buckling instability without an external force. Full control over the postbuckling pattern is experimentally demonstrated. A simple analytical model is developed using elastic energy to predict stability and postbuckling patterns upon swelling. Analysis reveals that the height to diameter ratio is the most critical design parameter to determine the buckling pattern, which agrees well with experimental and numerical results.
