<p>Jessie Maxwell, MD, MBA, as Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neurosciences, is a neonatologist and clinician scientist. Her primary research interests including the impact of prenatal exposure on the developing brain. Specifically, she investigates the effects of exposure to alcohol, cannabinoids, and/or opioids in utero on the structure and microstructure of the brain, as well as the impact this has on long-term neurodevelopmental function. Utilizing preclinical models, she is able to employ translational modes of investigation including Touchscreen behavior testing and Magnetic Resonance Imaging to detect subtle changes in cognitive functioning and organization of brain structure. She also investigates dendritic complexity in the frontal cortex, a region known to impact cognitive abilities. Dr. Maxwell is the director of research for the division of neonatology at the University of New Mexico.</p>

Collection Overview

Cannabinoid exposure in humans continues to increase. Historically, their use remains illegal at the federal level, and with cannabinoid products currently being classified as Schedule I drugs, access to the chemical for researchers has been challenging and has inhibited research in this area. A recent proposal may reclassify cannabinoid products as Schedule III drugs, potentially easing access for researchers. Of particular concern is the impact of cannabinoid exposure on fetal development during pregnancy.  

 

Consequently, this Methods Collection will focus on methodologies for cannabinoid exposure in animal models, including prenatal exposure models. As utilization continues to increase in the United States, quality research in this field is desperately needed. A collection focused on this important topic would support the standardization of the approaches, a crucial step in advancing our understanding of cannabinoid exposure.
