Developmental Toxicity of Environmental Chemicals: Current Approaches and Models

Collection Overview

The embryo/fetus is highly susceptible to environmental toxicants. Maternal exposure to environmental pollutions can result in congenital malformations and spontaneous abortion. This is especially true for environmental chemicals such as ethanol, PAHs, and PCBs, which can cross the placental barrier and bioaccumulate in the embryo/fetus. Thus, understanding the mechanisms through which environmental chemicals cause developmental toxicities would be of great benefit in the prevention or treatment of chemical-induced spontaneous abortion or congenital diseases. Unfortunately, traditional animal models are either too laborious or insensitive to developmental toxic effects. New methods based on the differentiation of stem cells or other animal models such as zebrafish and chicken embryos have emerged. Overall, this methods collection aims to provide details to researchers about novel animal and cell culture models for studying the developmental toxicities of environmental chemicals.
