James H. Tabibian, MD, PhD, FACP is an Associate Professor in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Director of Endoscopy at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center. His main professional interests are in advanced and therapeutic endoscopy and cholangiopathies. Dr. Tabibian received his MD degree from UCLA with Alpha Omega Alpha honors and completed Internal Medicine Residency in the Osler Training Program at Johns Hopkins. Thereafter, he became the first ABIM Subspecialty Research track fellow in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic Rochester. During his fellowship, he completed a PhD through Mayo Graduate School, Center for Clinical and Translational Studies. Following his training at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Tabibian joined the University of Pennsylvania as an Instructor and Advanced Endoscopy Fellow. Upon completion of his year at Penn, Dr. Tabibian was recruited to UC Davis Medical Center as an Assistant Professor and Director of GI Fellow Research. In 2017, he returned to Southern California, where he has remained active in research and medical education. Dr. Tabibian is experienced in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), mucosal resection (EMR), and luminal stenting, among other advanced procedures. He is highly published in the biomedical literature, is an ad hoc reviewer for leading peer-reviewed journals, holds several editorial positions, and has received extramural grants. Additionally, he serves as a consultant for various private and governmental entities nationally and internationally and is an expert medical reviewer in gastroenterology for the Medical Board of California.

Collection Overview

Endoscopy has dramatically changed the practice of gastroenterology and indeed medicine in general over the last several decades. As a field and platform, gastrointestinal endoscopy has expanded well beyond routine diagnostic capabilities, now being significantly embodied by therapeutic and other advanced interventional procedures and techniques. It represents a dynamic area of ongoing research and has become a fundamental part of multidisciplinary clinical management of both benign and malignant conditions from the esophagus to the rectum, the pancreatobiliary system, and beyond. The growing armamentarium of minimally invasive endoscopic solutions to a wide variety of clinical disorders holds exciting potential and opportunities for further innovation and collaboration.

This Methods Collection is intended to address the evolving arena of gastrointestinal endoscopy and both showcase as well as promote the dissemination of recent advances. Prospective authors are welcomed to submit manuscripts examining the current state of the art in gastrointestinal endoscopy, especially those related to any of the following topics:
